Concurrent Enrolment Abolished & Student Visa Financial Requirement Increased

Date: 29 August 2023

The department has removed the concurrent study functionality for students who have not completed 6 months of their principal course. Additionally, International students will also need to show evidence of $24,505 in savings from 01 October 2023 onwards.

Concurrent Enrolment “Loophole” Closed

Concurrent Enrolment allows overseas students in Australia on a student visa  to undertake an additional study (that is, a course of education or training) at the same time as the principal course for which they hold a student visa.

The Australian Government has announced that it is eliminating the concurrent study function for international students. Normally, students would have to wait at least six months to change providers, but this “loophole” allows them to do so much sooner after they arrive in Australia.

Providers will not be able to concurrently enrol students who have not completed 6 months of their principal course

There has been a “sharp uptake” in the use of the concurrent function in 2023, with 17,000 concurrent enrolments created in the first half of the year, compared to approximately 10,500 for the same period in 2019 and 2022 combined, according to the government.

This change does not impact students already holding concurrent enrolments.

Financial Requirements for Student Visa

From October 1 2023, international students will need to show evidence of $24,505 in savings, which is a 17% increase on current levels.

The Albanese Government outlines that the requirement was increased to reflect higher living expenses. This adjustment is intended to ensure that students who come to study in Australia have the means to financially support themselves, reducing the likelihood of exploitation due to an urgent need for employment.
