Australia has continuously added to its intellectual, economic, and ethnic fibre through migration. Each generation of new migrants has supplemented our collective demographic and culture. We have all benefited, in our language, technology, infrastructure, food, music & arts… and most people would agree migrants always bring more to our communal table than is evident in a visa application.
Covid19 has impacted every one of us; worldwide. Australia is also seeing that loss, not only in lives, a strained health system, businesses, and jobs, but also in a massive reduction in international travel to our country, international students, and new skilled and semi-skilled migrants, entering Australia.
Economists, state and federal governments, places of higher education, and rural businesses, are concerned. An interesting article, written just a few days ago in, in the Sydney Morning Herald, detailing those real, and quantifiable concerns, can be found HERE
The good news is, Australia is in a fortunate position, pertaining to the control of Covid. This is primarily due to the massive efforts of federal and state governments, our healthcare and first respondent workers, and, very importantly, the general public; who have, for the most part, embraced the changes to day-to-day living; in order to save lives and jobs.
And while some international travellers, for example, a few international tennis players unhappy to be in quarantine, have not fully accepted the severity of the Covid crisis, our response, and commitment to public health, has been a positive indication of how we can move forward, safely, post Covid.
However, people, and most especially rural businesses, are concerned that there will be a real shortage of workers, and without workers, the continued economic impact will be felt, deeper and longer. To that end, the federal government has acknowledged this concern, with action. On Jan 5th 2021, the federal government made changes to temporary visa’s, including current visa holders, to enable an increase in hours worked and other tweaks.

Australia is a huge country, land-mass-wise, and every one of us, from federal, to state governments, to educators & institutions, to businesses, large and small, to each individual; we all know that immigration feeds our nation just as much as our farming belt does. We learn from each other, we develop new skills, a broader understanding of the world beyond our borders, and a better quality of life, through migration.
And while there is still uncertainty, it is evident Australia has not only handled the Covid-Crisis well but is continuing to handle it exceptionally well. 2021 will be a testing year. As the various vaccines are rolled out, and people begin to return to a more stable mindset, Australia is well placed to embrace the next generation of migrants.
