Subclass 485 - Post-Higher Education Work Stream Visa

Subclass 485 Post-Higher Education Work stream is a temporary visa that allows International Students to live, study and work once they have completed any course of study at a degree level or above for two years. With this visa, you can:

  • Live and study/work full time in Australia, between 2 and 4 years, depending on your qualification.

There are 4 main streams to the Subclass 485 visa.

Post-Vocational Education Work stream

Subclass 485 is a temporary visa that allows International Students to live, study and work, once they have recently graduated with skills and qualifications in demand in Australia.

Post-Higher Education Work stream

Subclass 485 is a temporary visa that allows International Students to live, study and work, once they have once they have completed any course of study at a degree level or above for two years.

Second Post-Higher Education Work stream

This visa is for holders of a Temporary Graduate visa (first Post-Study Work stream or Replacement stream) who graduated with a degree from an Australian institution located in a regional area.

Subclass 485 - Post-Higher Education Work stream Eligibility

To be eligible for a Subclass 485 Post-Higher Education Work stream visa, you must: 

You must have applied / or were granted your first student visa to Australia on or after 5 November 2011. 

If you held your first student visa prior to this date (even as a child on your parent’s student visa), you will not be eligible to apply for this stream.

To be eligible for this visa you must have completed your course in the 6 months immediately before the day you apply.

This means that, to be eligible for the visa, you must be:

  • you are the main holder of a current student visa 
  • you held a student visa within the past 6 months before your application and you now have a Bridging Visa A or B, on the basis of a valid application for a visa
  • you held a student visa within the past 6 months before your application and you now hold a substantive visa
  • you are outside Australia and you hold or have held an eligible student visa

 

* Eligible Subclass 485 applicants can make their visa applications outside Australia, during the COVID-19 Concession period.

You must be 35 years of age or under when you apply. 

You can be under 50 years of age when you apply if you: 

  • are using a Masters (research) or Doctoral Degree (PhD) to meet the Australian study requirement, or
  • hold a Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport.

To be eligible,

  • your awarded degree, diploma or trade qualification must be CRICOS Registered;
  • you must have successfully completed all course requirements;
  • the study was in English;
  • you completed your course as a result of at least two academic years (92 weeks) study;
  • you completed your course in Australia in not less than 16 calendar months; and
  • you held an Australian study visa that allowed you to study.

 

Student visa holders affected by COVID-19 travel restrictions, can count online study towards the Australian Study Requirement.

Your course must have been with an Australian education provider who is registered on CRICOS  and offer degree-level programs.

The qualification that you have completed must be an eligible degree. This means a:

  • bachelor degree
  • bachelor (honours) degree
  • masters by coursework degree
  • masters (extended) degree
  • masters by research degree
  • doctoral degree

You must have adequate health cover for the whole of your stay to be granted this visa. 

Applicants and all secondary applicants aged 16 years and over must apply for an AFPCC check, at the time of application for the visa. 

You can either show that you hold a valid passport from: 

  •  the United Kingdom
  • the United States of America
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • the Republic of Ireland

or prove your English proficiency through an English test (within the last 3 years).

    What is the difference between Post-Vocational Education Work stream and Post-Higher Education Work stream?

    Subclass 485 – Post-Higher Education Work stream is for those who have completed any course of study at a degree level or above for two years. 

    If you have studied a standalone diploma or trade qualification, you are not eligible to be granted a Subclass 485 – Post-Higher Education Work stream.

    How long can I stay in Australia using Post-Higher Education Work stream visa?

    The length of your stay in Australia will depend on the level of your Australian study qualification.

    • Bachelor degree (including honours): 2 years
    • Masters by research and masters by coursework: 3 years
    • Doctoral degree: 4 years
    • Hong Kong and BNO passport holders who successfully complete a bachelor, masters or doctoral degree: 5 years
    Do I need a skills assessment for a Post-Higher Education Work stream visa?

    No, you do not require a skills assessment for the post study visa. 

    Do I need to nominate an occupation to qualify for a Subclass 485 - Post-Higher Education Work stream visa?

    No, you do not need to nominate an occupation  to qualify for the Post-Higher Education Work stream.

     

    Can I apply for this visa from overseas?

    Generally, you must be in Australia while applying for this visa.

    However, Graduates affected by COVID-19 travel restrictions are now able to apply for and be granted a Temporary Graduate visa outside Australia – they must hold or have held an eligible Student visa.

    Can I extend the Post Study Visa?

    You cannot extend this visa. However, you may be eligible to apply for a Second Post-Higher Education Work stream.

    To do this, you must live, work and/or study in a regional area while holding your first Post-Higher Education Work stream. That visa must have been granted based on a degree or higher from an Australian institution located in a regional area.

    Can I work full time?

    Yes, Subclass 485 provides full working rights. 

    When must I apply the visa by?

    You must apply for your 485 visa within 6 months of completion of your Australian studies. 

    Will I receive work rights on Subclass 485 - Bridging Visa?

    If you held your student visa immediately before applying for Subclass 485, the work rights on the bridging visa will come into effect when your student expires. However, we recommend that you check your VEVO to confirm this. 

    Can I cancel my Health cover once the visa is granted?

    You must maintain adequate health care coverage while holding your Subclass 485. If you do not, your 485 can be cancelled by the Department of Home Affairs.
